STAR TREK 2017
The June Bank Holiday Weekend sees us heading off to the Wicklow Mountains on our 6th annual STAR TREK.
We’ll meet at the Gresham Hotel, O’Connell Street in Dublin City Centre on Friday 2nd June 2017 at 7pm and get the bus to Johnny Foxes. From there we’ll walk to Knockree Hostel, in the dark, with our head torches – the night hike or STAR TREK part of our walk… A big feed then off to bed.
The following morning we have a cooked breakfast, collect our water and snacks, have a good stretch and head off along the Wicklow Way, through Powerscourt, over Djouce Mountain and on to Lough Dan where we stay the night. Another lovely hostel, a hot shower and the best meal you will ever have… Get your party piece ready for the sing song…
Sunday sees us head off once more through the beautiful countryside, ending up in Glendalough, 50km done. We are led by experienced guides and are fed throughout by the award winning chef in The Purty Kitchen. Our support driver takes all our bags and meets us en route with lunch, so you only need carry a day bag.
The hike is suitable for everyone – we have a big emphasis on enjoying the weekend so we’re not trying to break any land speed records! We just want to have a great weekend, in beautiful surroundings, great company, great food and all for a great cause! Sure what more would you want? Good hiking boots and a rain jacket are 2 things you would want but after that?…We even organise practise hikes in the run up to the big weekend so really, you have no excuse!
The weekend costs €350 – that includes all your food, accommodation, water and snacks.
To secure your place, register at: https://give.everydayhero.com/ie/star-trek and pay €100. The remaining €250 can be paid in June.
The money raised will go towards our Building Programme in July and the construction of teacher quarters for Kawuula Primary School. We only have
15 10 places left so book early! See you in June!
10KM WALK FOR OLIVE.
Olive is the school cook in Madudu C.U. Primary School. We pay half of her wages each month – the school pay the other half. Olive gets paid UGX70,000 a month by us, about €18. As her wages from us always arrive on time and in full, she has been able to budget and has recently started building a little house for herself and her children. The foundations are finished, the walls are up to window height. She is currently buying a bag of cement each month and will go back to buying bricks soon to bring the building up to ring beam level…
Come and join us for a lovely 10km walk around Howth Head in October, to pay for Olive’s wages for the coming year. We meet at the Bloody Stream, under Howth DART Station and head off down towards the pier, up Main Street, over the summit, back down, along Offington and up the Howth Road back to the Bloody Stream. It’s €18 a head to join us but children go free and there is no problem in meeting us part of the way around if 10km is too long for the kids!

CHRISTMAS AND MOTHER’S DAY CARDS
Each year we sell Christmas Cards and Mother’s Day Cards with funds raised going towards our Safe Motherhood Programme. Beautifully designed by AnnMarie McElhinney and costing €5 each, the cards provide expectant mothers in Madudu with a Mama Kit so she can deliver her baby safely and a mosquito net so she can keep her new baby safe.
For full details on our Safe Motherhood Programme, check out our Programmes Page.
To order your cards, pm Deborah on the Lámha Suas Facebook page or text her on 085 215 6880. Christmas Cards will be on sale from the beginning of November 2017.
WHAT COULD YOU DO???
If you would like to hold a fundraiser for us, please let us know. We can provide t-shirts, sponsorship cards, information leaflets, collection buckets… and we would be only too pleased to advertise your event here on our webpage and on our Facebook page.
If you knit or crochet we’d love to hear from you. We try to bring a hat and cardigan to Uganda each July for the babies on our Safe Motherhood Programme. The best sizes for us to bring are 3-6 months and 6-9 months, any type of wool, any colour.
The last Saturday in January each year is the Lámha Suas Big Night Out – it’s not a fundraiser, just an opportunity for anyone who has been involved with Lámha Suas or who is interested in what we do, to come together for dinner and drinks and a chat. We hold it in the Purty Kitchen in Monkstown, 3 mins walk from the DART station, €30 a head. Great food, great venue, great company. It is a great night out.
